Management of rural landscapes
Almost 4 000 hectares of field remain in Vantaa, of which the city owns almost 800 hectares. Of the 800 hectares, the city manages 320 hectares on its own. The city's farm fields are mostly located in Western Vantaa, and operations have their starting point to the east of Katrineberg estate's cowshed, situated in Seutula.
The green-area program states the objective of management of city-owned fields as follows: "Open cultural landscapes will remain well-managed." Thanks to cultivation, Vantaa's cultural landscape will remain diverse, productive, and vital. The landscape can only retain is cultural-historical, ecological and esthetic values if cultivation is carried on.
Management of cultural landscapes
The aims are to maintain a well-managed cultural landscape, to enrich the urban image, and to apply effective and environmentally friendly operations. Cultivation plans are based on cultivation cycles, the widest year-round plant coverage possible, and use of cultivated plants enlivening the landscape. Some of the cultivated fields have significant cultural-historical values.
In 2015, city-managed fields grow:

winter rye 33 ha

rapeseed 28 ha
perennial green fallow 46 ha

Landscape flower fields
In 2015, sunflower, cornflower, marigold and bluebell will be cultivated in landscape flower fields in different parts of Vantaa. The residents can pick up flowers for their own pleasure in designated fields, which will be advertised and marked with location directories and signs.
Cherishing cultural heritage
The Friends of Vantaa Folklore Society and the City of Vantaa annually organize rye harvesting in Seutula during which rye is harvested with traditional methods and new rye is planted in furrows.
Sheep will arrive in Tikkurila central park in June
This year—as in many previous years—sheep will again not only care for Tikkurila central park's landscape but also delight residents. The breed of the sheep is Finnsheep, and the lambs were born in Haltiala estate, Helsinki, in spring 2015. Upon arrival in Tikkurila, they will be around three months old.
Their grazing season begins in June and will continue until early October or until the pasture runs out of nutrition. The lambs will take turns in grazing in two parcels, so that they would continuously have enough fresh grass to eat. The three-hectare area is fenced and the lambs have a built-in feeding- and drinking place as well as a pasture shed.
