FAQ Frequently asked questions
Bulletin 23 August 2021
Infection tracing is severely overloaded; we will contact you as soon as possible. Wait for our contact. The call often comes from a private number.
Q: I have received a positive result. When will I be called?
A: Infection tracing is severely overloaded; we will contact you as soon as possible. You have received primary instructions by a text message. Follow the instructions and wait for our call. Prepare yourself for the call according to the instructions given.
Q: I have received a positive result. How long do I have to stay in quarantine?
A: The duration of the quarantine is at min. 10 days from the beginning of the symptoms, or from the day of the test for those without symptoms. When the quarantine ends, you must have been free of symptoms for 2 days. (Some symptoms such as changes in smell and taste and tiredness may continue for a long time. These non-transmitting symptoms constitute no reason to continue the quarantine.)
Q: I have been exposed. How long will my quarantine last?
A: The length of quarantine is 10 days from the last day of exposure (the day when you met the diseased person) or, if you live in the same household with the diseased person, 10 days from the beginning of the said person's symptoms. If you have no symptoms, you can shorten the length of the quarantine with a negative sample taken at the earliest six (6) days from the exposure. For further information visit thl.fi/fi/web/infektiotaudit-ja-rokotukset/ajankohtaista/
Q: I may have been exposed, what must I do?
A: If a reliable source (e.g., the diseased person themselves, your employer, school principal / daycare center director, etc.) has informed you about your exposure, begin voluntary quarantine and wait for instructions.
Infection tracing and charting of the exposed will be conducted together with the diseased person. The diseased person will give the exposed persons’ information to the infection tracer. We will send the primary text message to the exposed as soon as we receive the notification of exposure. Follow the instructions given in the message.
Q: I have to stay away from work, how to act?
A: Inform your employer of your absence. If the quarantine causes you loss of income, you are entitled to Kela's infectious disease allowance for the duration of the quarantine. Further information: kela.fi/tartuntatauti. You can also get the disease tracer’s certificate retroactively. A guardian has the right to stay at home to care for an under-16-year-old child, if the child has been ordered in isolation or quarantine.
Q: My child has been at school/daycare center during the transmission period, what must I do?
A: Inform the school principal / daycare center director of your child's sickness. The principal and director will take the required measures together with infection tracing.
Q: How do I get/apply for infectious disease allowance?
A: You apply to Kela for infectious disease allowance. The Communicable Diseases Control and Hygiene Unit will give you an official's decision, compliant with the Communicable Diseases Act, with which you can apply for the allowance. Agree on the application with your employer. More information on the infectious disease allowance is provided by Kela.
Q: A person living in my household has received a positive result, how shall we act?
A: The person that received the positive result will be placed in isolation (see earlier question) and the other people in the household in quarantine (see earlier question).
Q: I have received two vaccinations, must I stay in quarantine?
A: If more than 7 days have passed since the second shot and if you have no symptoms, you do not have to stay in quarantine. Nevertheless, carefully observe your state of health and go immediately to coronavirus sampling if symptoms arise. A person without symptoms who has received two coronavirus vaccinations and who lives in the same household as the diseased person is recommended to take a coronavirus test six days after the exposure. Vaccination will not completely remove the possibility of infection; thus, if you have any symptoms indicative of coronavirus, stay at home and contact coronavirus counseling so that your situation will be assessed.
Q: I have been sick with coronavirus less than 6 months ago, shall I stay in quarantine?
A: If you have been sick with coronavirus less than 6 months ago, you do not have to stay in quarantine. The antibodies of coronavirus disease do not completely remove the possibility of new infection; thus, if you have any symptoms indicative of coronavirus, stay at home and contact coronavirus counseling so that your situation will be assessed.
Q: How do I get a certificate of coronavirus disease / coronavirus vaccination or test result?
A: The EU’s joint coronavirus vaccination certificate will be available on My Kanta where you will also find answers to frequently asked questions about coronavirus certificates. If you cannot use My Kanta, contact your own health center.
Q: I want to travel, where can I get a certificate of having been sick with coronavirus disease?
A: Ask your own health center for the certificate. Remember to ask for the certificate well in advance of your travel. Remember to clarify and account for the target country’s requirements already when planning the journey.
