Vantaa light rail

Vantaan ratikka havainnekuva

Vantaa light rail combines Hakunila and Länsimäki areas with the rail network and creates a direct connection to Tikkurila, Aviapolis, and the airport. The new light rail connection makes it possible to develop East Vantaa's urban structure in a totally new way, and it links the areas with efficient public transport as a stronger part of the network of city centers.

The City Council decided on December 16, 2019, that planning Vantaa light rail will continue based on the general plan, provided that the government commits 30% to the light-rail planning and implementation costs. Further planning will decide on the local detailed plan amendments required by the light rail; outlines for street plans for the entire light rail; as well as the building plans. An investment decision will be sought from the City Council circa 2023. The building could begin in 2024, in which case the light rail would be available for use at the earliest in 2028.

  • Median speed: 25 km/h
  • Schedule during rush hours: 5 minutes, otherwise: 10-20 minutes

In the fall 2018, an online survey on the light rail opened for everybody. The online survey was available on October 3-30, 2018. Residents’ events on the light rail have been arranged in Länsimäki, Hakunila, Tikkurila, and Aviapolis. In the future, residents can influence planning of the light rail in connection with, for instance, future local detailed plan amendments and street plans.

Other light rail lines

In addition to Vantaa light rail, we are also making preparations for other light rail lines. For example, the draft local master plan designates a rail connection from Jumbo toward Helsinki through Tammisto and from Pakkala toward Myyrmäki in the west. Preparations are also made for changing the current trunk line 560 into a light rail line.
